Dr Marx's artificial ice can be of great benefit in replantations. Replantation refers to the reattachment of severed or amputated body parts, such as fingers, hands or toes. Artificial ice can be used to relieve symptoms, cool and speed up the healing process, improve blood circulation to the affected area and reduce pain. It can help stabilise the tissues and improve mobility. It can also help the body adapt better to replantation and speed up healing. The artificial ice consists of completely harmless crystals. When these crystals are dissolved in liquid (preferably water, but also aqueous drinks or simple infusion solutions), energy is consumed. This causes the mixture of artificial ice and liquid to cool down. The artificial ice provides an optimal cooling temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius. Lower temperatures can lead to frostbite!
