Sample vials are another receptacle which can be used for the collection and storage of media, but can also be used for preservation and exhibition. Sample vials may be made out of plastic or glass. For example, HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a thermoplastic polymer, made of high-density polyethylene and so can resist external influences, such as splitting. PP (polypropylene) is also available and is very similar to HDPE-type plastics, however, PP is slightly harder and more heat-resistant. Borosilicate glass is a type of glass that is made using silica and boron oxide, making the glass resistant to thermal shocks. Sample vials are also available with screw caps, and with or without graduation on the vial and/or sterile or non-sterile. For example, Hach® hinged-cap vials meet the requirements for microbiology sampling, where collection, incubation, and accurate reading can all be done in the vial without a transfer step. This vial has a flat bottom, but other vials are available round or conical-bottomed.
