AED defibrillators, also known as automated external defibrillators, are portable devices that can save lives in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. They are easy to use and can also be used by non-professionals to help a person in distress.
How does an AED defibrillator work?
- Switch on: Switch on the AED defibrillator. Most devices will then guide you step by step through the process of defibrillation.
- Apply electrodes: Attach the AED defibrillator's electrodes to the patient's bare chest as described in the device's voice prompts.
- Analysis: The AED defibrillator analyzes the patient's heart rhythm and determines if a shock is required.
- Shock delivery: If a shock is required, the AED defibrillator will signal this acoustically and visually. Do not touch the patient during shock delivery.
- Resuscitation: Follow the instructions on the AED defibrillator to start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
AED defibrillators can be found in many public places, e.g. doctors' surgeries, hospitals, airports, train stations, shopping centers, sports facilities, schools and public buildings
AED defibrillators are important because they significantly increase the chances of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest. The time between the cardiac arrest and defibrillation is crucial for the patient's survival. The faster an AED defibrillator is used, the greater the chances of saving the patient.
