Naturally occurring amorphous silica of fossil origin, also known as diatomaceous earth, bacillary earth or diatomite. Specially purified for chromatographic applications. Compared to silica gel, diatomaceous earth has a small, less active surface (application in partition chromatography). After impregnation with different substances (paraffin, silicone oil, undecane) it can be used for reversed phase chromatography.
