Filter flakes bring difficult to filter precipitates and colloidal particles into a filterable form. In slimy and highly swellable precipitates, the fibres of the filter flakes prevent the formation of a coherent impermeable layer on the filter. The filter cake remains porous and permeable, and "clogging" of the filter is prevented.
